Columbia, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster says he's created a new rapid response coalition to help the thousands of people who were left without a job after worked stopped at two nuclear reactors at the VC Summer Nuclear Station this week.
McMaster said Thursday the group will be called "Employ SC," and is a mix of public and private organizations. They'll be focused on matching "prospective employers with talented workers that fit their needs." Laid off workers will be able to connect with state agencies and workforce development groups for these positions.
Their first event will be in Chapin on Monday, August 14 from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. It will be held at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies at 916 Mt. Vernon Road in Chapin.
Every cabinet agency with current vacancies will also be represented and will be ready to interview prospective employees. Local businesses with vacancies will also participate
“For South Carolinians, the shuttering of VC Summer comes as a jarring break of faith – not only for the thousands of employees now searching for jobs after a decade of construction, but for millions of consumers whose power bills are paying for a project that will never be completed," McMaster said in a statement.
He said the state won't rest until it's exhausted every avenue for those affected.
Details for future Employ SC events will be announced at a later date.
