COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers are considering legislation that would require neonatal testing for certain genetic disorders and diseases in addition to the existing newborn screenings.
Wednesday, a House subcommittee voted unanimously in favor of Dylan's Law. The panel changed the original version from screening six to three. The proposal would require the Department of Health and Environmental Control to test for Hurler syndrome, Krabbe and Pompe disease in addition to the 53 conditions the agency already screens.
The bill was named after Dylan Emery who was diagnosed with Krabbe disease at six months and died at 11 months from the effects of the nervous system disease.
Republican Rep. John McCravy of Greenwood said the bipartisan-backed bill could pave the way for additional testing of other genetic disorders in the future.
