CHARLESTON, S.C. — Shrimp lovers, rejoice! The 2019 shrimp season has opened in South Carolina and officials say it's looking good!
As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, the shrimp season has fully opened in South Carolina waters, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).
"After last year's poor shrimping, we're happy to say 2019's forecast is more optimistic," SCDNR officials say. The 2018 season opened about a month later than usual after a cold winter killed off the majority of the overwintering white shrimp that normally make up the spring crop.
This year, the white shrimp numbers appear to have returned to the ten-year average, hopefully heralding a better season.
