Columbia, SC (WLTX) — Law enforcement agencies from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee are teaming up for "Operation Southern Shield," which run through Saturday July 21st.

Drivers can expect strict enforcement of law governing speed violations, driving under the influence, distracted driving and failure to buckle up.

The purpose of "Operation Southern Shield" is to increase enforcement during the heavy vacation travel period when the rate of fatal crashes is highest throughout the Southeast.

Here are some tips to keep your family safe this summer:

  • Slower traffic should avoid the fast lane. If you’re going to cruise, do it in the slow lane.
  • Anticipate increased traffic during peak travel periods. Plan ahead and give yourself ample drive time.
  • Aggressive driving escalates road rage. Take preventive measures to defuse the situation. Road rage and aggressive driving will not be tolerated.
  • Resist the urge to check your phone. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and concentration on the task of driving.
  • Obey all posted speed limits or drive slower if necessary based on traffic conditions.

So far this year, 507 people have died on South Carolina roads, compared to 556 last year.
