SPRINGFIELD, S.C. — A South Carolina town has a new police chief after its former chief was accused of taking bribes to help people get visas to enter or stay in the country.

The Times & Democrat reported Wednesday that Springfield Mayor Ed Furtick announced Timothy J. Wilkie as the new chief.

Former chief Lacra S. Jenkins and town police Officer Allan Hunter Jr. were among nine people indicted last month on visa fraud and drug charges in the plot.

News outlets report some of those people also are accused of protecting drug trafficking cartel proceeds. Four of them worked as deputies at the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the plot focused on visas requiring police to certify that applicants are helping with a case.
