Staying safe on the water for the 4th

"It is wall to wall people out on the lake" says Marine Patrol Sergeant Thomas Hamilton.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — With the Fourth of July holiday, law enforcement officials expect more boaters to be out on the water.

"It is wall to wall people out on the lake" says Marine Patrol Sergeant Thomas Hamilton.

"During this week we will keep a minimum of two (law enforcement) boats out here for Lexington county and we will also have an increase patrol this weekend with both DNR and Lexington County Sheriff's department on the lake" says Hamilton.

Deputies say it's imperative for folks to check the weather and make sure all lights work on the craft before putting them into the water.

TIPS for safe travel on the water:

1. Have a life jacket that fits each person. Not only is it state law for each individual to have a life jacket and officials actually recommend each passenger wears it while on the water.

 2. File a float plan with a friend or family member that list the times boaters will be on the water and the times boaters will dock on shore.  This is in case of an emergency or a break down with the boat, law enforcement can have an easier time finding lost individuals.

3.Don't boat under the influence. If passengers do drink make sure there is a designated driver who will not be consuming alcohol and driving the boat.
