Community volunteers build home for resident in Cordova

People who live in Orangeburg county are coming together to lend a helping hand and lift up those in need.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Folks who live in Orangeburg county are coming together to lend a helping hand and lift up those in need.

What has taken nearly two months is nearing completion as a group of volunteers from Edisto Habitat for Humanity are working to build a home for a resident in Cordova.

This is the second home out of four that the Edisto branch of Habitat will build in 2019. The team of volunteers that live in the county are working on the homes and have a almost 90 years of experience in construction.

Tom Kerr, who has been volunteering with habitat for over 25 years says, "We’re bringing new families into the community.  We are making a new life for them. A lot of these families are living in substandard housing right now and this gives them the opportunity to start a new life."

Walter Weeks, another volunteer who has been volunteering with different organizations to build homes since his childhood says, "We have a great deal of pride in what we do to support the community and give people that are in need a home to live in."

The building process will continue for the next several days and will be presented to the home owner on May 30th.
