18 wheeler runs off highway causing fatal crash

One person died on the scene of a car crash near St. Andrews Road.

IRMO, S.C. — Around 7PM  last night, an 18-wheeler veered off of I-26 onto Fernandina Rd. where it hit a pickup truck head on, killing the man inside.

The 18-wheeler was heading west towards Spartanburg right pass the St. Andrews road exit when he ran off of the highway onto the road.

The driver hit a pickup truck that was driving towards St. Andrews road, crashed into six cars belonging to the Dick Smith Nissan dealership and then crashed into an electric pole.

Repair crews were out all day today replacing that pole that was damaged.

The driver of the pickup truck was entrapped inside once hit, and died at the scene according to troopers. He has since been identified as 51-year-old Calvin Ray Casson of Columbia.

The Dick Smith Dealership that was affected moved the six vehicles that were damaged to the back of their property and will hand the issue over to their insurance. 

We’ve reached out to Highway Patrol to find out what caused the driver to veer off of 26, but have not heard back.The investigation is still ongoing.
