IRMO, S.C. — The 2nd Annual Irmo Chili Cook Off is Saturday afternoon.
“What do you do when its freezing outside, its cold, its dreary? What do you do for your family?" Irmo Mayor Barry Walker asks. "You make chili!”
Last year Mayor Walker got together with a few friends who all suffer from kidney issues to put together an event to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation.
“We got together and said, ‘lets have a big chili cook off and educate the community about kidney donation and going through the process of having kidney disease,'” Walker remembers. As a dialysis patient himself, its a cause that is near to him.
“It was Kenny Robinson, myself and some other members," Walker says, "We got together, had four people cooking and they all donated their time. We raised $500 for the National Kidney Foundation and that was just donations."
"Well this year, we decided to have it again but unfortunately Kenny passed away in July, so we decided to make this a memorial remembering Kenny Robinson and his donation to the community," Walker told Street Squad. "So now we’re having the 2nd Annual Irmo Chili Cook Off in memory of Kenny Robinson right here in the community park and this year we have 10 people cooking chili.”
The event is Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Irmo Community Park. There is no price to attend but donations to the National Kidney Foundation will be accepted.
