'Just be safe out there': Irmo police will host safety checkpoints this weekend

Due to recent reviews of crash data, Irmo police will have some extra patrol this weekend.

IRMO, S.C. — Irmo police are stepping up their patrols with some extra checkpoints throughout the town.

“Its in response to some of the crash data we’ve been looking at," Cpt. Courtney Dennis explains. "Just this passed year we’ve had 146 collisions in the town and collisions are caused by a number of different reasons: following too close, speeding, too fast for conditions. So we’re going to target that area [Broad River Road to Ballentine] and look for those drivers that are violating.”

Dennis says they will be looking specifically for impaired drivers, aggressive drivers, distracted drivers.

"During the checkpoint itself, we will be not only looking for those impaired drivers but examining vehicles as well to make sure they’re safe for our roadway," he says.
