'We have forgiven them': Lexington church victim of cemetery vandalism

It appears a grave site has been damaged after what looks like car tires came through the cemetery.

Last week, members of the New Bethel AME church found a grave site damaged in their cemetery.

“We believe this vandalism occurred between the evening of April 18th and the morning of April 19th," says Lexington Police Cpl. Cameron Mortenson, "It looks like from what investigators have been able to put together so far, that somebody hit several of the head stones and grave site areas."

The Rev. Doctor Elaine Johnson Eskew says their church has been in Lexington since 1865, and they are a family. She says her paternal grandparents are even buried in that cemetery.

Eskew says this to whoever is responsible,“We’re would just like to let them know that we have forgiven them and they are welcome to come and fellowship with us."

“We’re asking anybody that has any information to come forward. You know if it was an accident, if somebody was looking for Pokemon, we know this is a Pokemon Go site, and accidentally backed into it and then drove away because they didn’t know what to do after that, we just want them to come forward.”

If you know anything at all about what happened here, you can reach out to the Lexington Police Department at their office or on any of their social media pages. If you would like to remain anonymous, you can reach out to Midlands Crime Stoppers at 1888-CRIMESC.
