Locals push for positive change in Rembert Community

Since the early 2000s, a group in Rembert has been working to improve the area.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — In Rembert, you won’t find a lot of big businesses or too many big box stores, but what you will find are people who care about the area’s success and hope to see it grow.

Juanita Britton is the founder of the Rembert Area Community Coalition - a group dedicated to improving the area.

Since the early 2000s, Britton says the group has hosted after school and summer programs for the youth, created a space for seniors and advocated for the needs of the community.

"The goal for the organization is to make Rembert a place where people can live, work and play," Britton said, "and also to get the community involved in what we're doing."

Britton says she'd like to see locals assist with volunteer efforts, donate and share ideas to help the area grow.

"We need more housing... [and] more lights," Britton said. "We need to be able to walk down the street without being in the street.... Our long-term goal is to get the town incorporated.... Incorporation will bring dollars here that we can manage."

"I would like to see more things for the young people, such as a rec center," Jennifer Benjamin said.

"They need volunteers," Janie "Poochie" Jackson-McClinton said. "If you're from a community, take part in that community."

The Rembert Area Community Coalition is located on 8455 Camden Hwy. They're open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday.
