'Keep your mind from growing idle' says 82 year-old volunteer

Everyday for nearly a decade, 82 year-old Helen Jamison, has volunteered with the Council on Aging.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Everyday for nearly a decade, 82 year-old Helen Jamison, has attended and volunteered with the council on aging.

"It’s just a pleasure to keep abreast and just keep moving and keep your mind from growing idle" says Jamison.

She has been volunteering at council on aging since 2010 and although she doesn't it isn't a full time job, she takes her opportunity to serve seriously.

Jamison helps the other seniors prepare for lunch by prepping the utensils.

"I’m getting the silverware ready. After I get them together I place them in their silverware bags and then I always keep a box here to drop them in and when the box is completed I’ll start with next" says Jamison.

"My husband passed away six years ago but I was even here before he died and I think I continued on so that I could get out and keep my mind active so I could be of help to people in my same age bracket," she says.

Jamison has carpal tunnel syndrome, but she says it doesn’t stop her from serving the her fellow council on aging members. The syndrome is described as a numbness and tingling in the hand and arm caused by a pinched nerve.

"I work through the pain because the pain sometimes will go away because of the movement of my hands and I continue on and then it’s there anymore," Jamison said. "I just enjoy every bit of it from the time I enter and start my duties for the day till the end. I’ve met some very nice people while I’ve been here and it’s like we’ve been friends since childhood" continued Jamison.
