Rosewood nature trail getting a facelift

After receiving a grant from the Richland County Conservation Committee, Rosewood volunteers are giving their nature trail a makeover.

ROSEWOOD, S.C. — The Rosewood community is working to improve their nature trail in the Owens Field Park area.

Mike Ely is a Rosewood neighborhood council member.

"Last year we started the Rosewood Nature Trail- a way to improve the park at Owen's Field," said Ely, "We got a grant from R.C.C.C. (Richland County Conservation Commission) last year to do a show case garden of native plants in the area."

Through a collaboration with the Richland County Conservation Commission, Rosewood Neighborhood Council and the Rosewood Rangers, this nature trail at Owen's Field will soon be home to plants that you can easily grow right in your backyard.

"So instead of going down to Lowe's or Home Depot and buying non-natives, there's flowering trees, flowering plants, grasses, everything else that grow well in our area, require less water, less care, sort of grow on their own," Ely said, "so we're planting this area to give people an idea of what they can do in their own yard."

Herrick Brown is the Curator of the A.C. Moore Herbarium Department of Biological Sciences at U of SC and also grew up and now lives in the Rosewood community, "Growing up as a child in the Rosewood nieghborhood I rode my bike through this area for years and years and I'm a botanist by profession and this is something that is near and dear to me in terms of conservation and restoring our native lands."

Though in the early stages of the transformation, the crew is excited about the change, "This is just sort of an extension of trying to make our neighborhood better."
