West Columbia looking for artists to transform alleyway

The alleyway connects State Street with the new interactive art park and parking lot currently under construction.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — The City of West Columbia is looking an artist who wants to transform an alleyway into a masterpiece.

Street Squad talked to Teresa on Thursday morning at Food Lion in West Columbia, and she says she's excited about the new mural coming to the city and wants to know more about it.

Tara Greenwood, director of grants and special projects in West Columbia, says this space needs a face-lift.

“We want it to be everything an alleyway is not. We want to make it warm, welcoming, inviting, and vibrant,” said Greenwood.

The alleyway connects State Street with the new interactive art park and parking lot, which is currently under construction.

“We’ve got to make this alleyway more,” explained Greenwood. “We’re going to make it a part of this project so what better way than to paint a mural on these alleyway walls to freshen up, make it lively, just bring in that connectivity piece and also showcase our artists.”

The City of West Columbia is calling for artists, especially locals, to bring their idea for the murals. The artist chosen to work on the murals will be in charge of painting two 12-by-60-foot long walls.

“We are accepting sealed proposal packages. We ask for kind of like a resume and a description of the idea. We would love sketches and renderings, but at least a really good detail description of what your idea is for this alleyway mural space,” said Greenwood.

The city plans on paving the alleyway space that will connect the street and the new interactive art park. If you would like to check out the location of the alley, it's between 118 State Street and New Brooklyn Tavern.

The city's hospitality tax will help pay for the project. They’re hoping to have mural ready at some point during the month of May.

Art proposals are due no later than 2 p.m. April 11. For more information on how to submit your proposal, click here.
