Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) A fourth-grade student at Edisto Elementary school brought an unloaded gun to school on Monday, officials say.
According to Ernest Holiday, the assistant superintendent of human resources for Orangeburg School District 4, the .25 caliber handgun was in the student's pocket and was discovered by the teacher when he opened his pocket to show another student. The student was immediately taken to the office and sheriff department's called.
"I want parents to know that the measures that are in place that call for teachers to be vigilant and students to report anything out of the ordinary was successful," said Holiday.
The student was released to his parents and will have an expulsion hearing . No charges have been file yet, according to the sheriff's department.
School year for Orangeburg School District Four was to have ended on Friday, however Monday was a makeup day for inclement weather missed day during the school year.
