Irmo, SC (WLTX) – Mandy DaWalt has been teaching math for more than a decade and knows numbers can sometimes be overwhelming.
“Percentages are scary, but they use them every day,” said DaWalt. “Anytime they shop, especially during the holiday season.”
The Dutch Fork Middle School teacher says she wants her students to understand what they learn in the classroom can be used in the real world. For example, how to calculate sales tax.
“Lots of people are shopping so it becomes relevant to them and they can see the value in needing to understand it,” said DaWalt.
Carter Whalon is a 7th grade student who loves working with numbers. He says he’s thankful for the extra time Mrs. DaWalt devotes to her students.
“If you ever need help, she’s always there for you,” said Whalon. “She tries to help everyone. She’s just a really nice teacher.”
