Sumter, SC (WLTX) - For more than a decade, Patty Hansen has been inspiring young readers across the Carolinas.

“Mrs. Hansen is just one of those people that sticks with you,” said Madison Moore. “We all treat each other like family in the classroom.”

Moore is an 8th grade student at Alice Drive Middle School in Sumter. She says Mrs. Hansen’s colorful personality helps keep students engaged.

She just makes everything fun,” said Sudie-Grace Cromer. “We’re always on our feet and she’s always got a smile on her face.”

Mrs. Hansen says she keeps that smile, because she truly loves what she does. Helping students connect with the text.

“We all know that children love movies,” said Hansen. “I want to help them create that imagery and to become one of those characters.”

Our News 19 crew saw how enthusiastic her students are about learning.

“Edgar Allen Poe is a very in-depth author,” said Moore. “It really helps us to understand how he writes if we’re acting it out and can understand his mindset.”

Nearly a dozen students wrote in to nominate Mrs. Hansen as the News 19 Teacher of the Week.
