News19 Teacher of the Week: Sarah Guffey

Sarah Guffey says the key to managing her classroom is making sure she encourages independence in her first grade students.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Sarah Guffey has been an educator for nine years but she's known since she was a child that she wanted to be a teacher. She's learned from some amazing educators what it takes to manage a classroom. Guffey is a fourth generation teacher. Her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were all educators.

She actually uses the rocking chair her grandmother was given when she retired from teaching in her classroom.

Guffey teaches first grade students at Leaphart Elementary School in Lexington Richland School District 5. Her principal describes her as a "best all around educator".

Guffey says the key to managing her classroom is making sure she encourages independence in her students, setting expectations and watching as they achieve their goals.

If you know an educator like Sarah Guffey who deserves to be recognized for their hard work in the classroom, send us an email nominating that educator for Teacher of the Week to TOW@WLTX.com
