Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Tara Simmons has a class full of third graders who are not afraid of trying new things. She says many times, the students become the teachers but not before they get some encouragement from their classmates.

There are cheers, and mission statements and it all begins with their pledge to persevere through hard work.

Simmons has been a teacher for 10 years and her entire educational career has been spent at Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary School in Richland District 2.

She's a Midlands native who says that she has 3 favorite teachers, and they all taught her in elementary school.

Simmons students say that there are two rules in her class. The first is that they can't use the word "can't" and they have to give her a hug every day before they leave school.
