Teen bicyclist injured in accident with car in Columbia Tuesday morning

Police say the driver of the vehicle fled the scene and did not stop to check on the victim.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A teen suffered minor injuries when his bike collided with a car in north Columbia Tuesday morning, according to officials with the Columbia Police Department.

The incident happened around 7:45 a.m. on North Main Street at Fairfield Road in north Columbia.

Police say a 14-year-old male on a bike was traveling west in a crosswalk across North Main toward Fairfield Road when a vehicle traveling south on N. Main stopped at a red light.

When the light turned green, both the teen and female driver advanced and collided. Police say it appears that the teen accidentally rode into the driver's side of the vehicle.

The teen was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, including scrapes and bruises, investigators say.

Police say the female driver of the vehicle fled the scene and did not stop to check on the victim.

The vehicle she was driving is described as possibly a silver or gray 4-door Chevy Malibu or Impala with tinted windows and paper tag, possibly stolen out of Richland County. Richland County deputies could not immediately confirm whether the car was stolen out of Richland County.
