RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — One person is dead after a three-vehicle accident on I-26 Friday evening.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. on I-26 East near Exit 97 (Ballentine, White Rock, Peak), according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP).

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has identified the deceased driver as 54-year-old Johnson Reynolds Butchart of Chapin.

Officials say Butchart was traveling east on I-26 in a Ford Ranger pickup truck when he lost control and struck a Dodge Ram pickup truck, which ran off the right side of the road.

After the initial crash, Butchart's vehicle collided with a Freightliner tractor trailer, which was entering I-26 East from Exit 97.

He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, according to Trooper Southern.
