VERIFY: Is Spring Break Being Shortened by Midlands School District?

Lexington, SC (WLTX) - There's been a post going around on Facebook saying that there may be changes to spring break for Lexington County School District One for the 2018-2019 school year.

According to the post, it says the board may be planning on changing spring break for the district to two separate long weekends in the month of March and April of next year instead of having one long week off from school.

It's been shared over 300 times and people are outraged commenting on the post saying it's unfair to change Spring Break dates this close to the next school year. Many folks say they get their vacation plans set for Spring Break over a year in advance.

News 19 wanted to verify whether or not this was true or false. The district's public information officer, Mary Beth Hill, says the spring break dates are now set for one full week on April 15 through the 19 of next year.

Hill says there's no plans at this time to change the format of the break but they may move the dates a little earlier.

According to an email the district sent to employees, it says "a group of parents recently asked if Spring Break had to be as late as it was currently scheduled on the 2018-2019 academic calender. As a result, the calendar committee decided to look at the calendar to see if it could do something to move Spring Break earlier."

As of now, the district says that a draft of the academic calendar will be proposed at the next meeting on April 17th.

Since the format of spring break won't change at this time according to the district, News 19 can verify that the post that's been shared is false.
