Video surveillance released from deadly Rosewood crash

According to the Columbia Police Department, the suspect drove off from a traffic stop. Investigators say they were trying to stop him from driving erratically.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — News 19 has obtained surveillance video showing the crash on Rosewood Drive that left one person dead on Sunday.

According to investigators, the crash happened at the corner of Rosewood Driver and Superior Street at 7:35 in the morning.

Carolyn Hargrove saw the moment 46-year-old Anthony Harris crashed into a brick wall right off Rosewood Drive.

“He was going at a very high rate, speed rate,” said Hargrove. “I looked out the window and caught the tail end hit this wall. By this time I was so shook because I saw so many police cars.”

According to the Columbia Police Department, Harris drove off from a traffic stop. Investigators say they were trying to stop him from driving erratically.

“He's somebody's brother, uncle, daddy, or son. It's just a sad situation,” explained Hargrove.

News 19 has obtained surveillance video showing the crash, the car can be seen coming from Superior Street right before it overturns and Harris is ejected from the car. We have chosen not to show you the actual a collision because of its graphic content.

Columbia Police says officers lost sight of the vehicle and then later discovered the car wrecked on Rosewood.

Moments later, the video surveillance shows Columbia Police arriving on scene within five seconds of the crash.

A report Monday from the Richland County Coroner's Office says Harris died due to multiple blunt force injuries to the head and body. Harris reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt.

News 19 reached out to the Columbia Police Department and they released this statement:

"Per protocol, IA investigates officer-involved vehicle collisions and vehicle pursuits to ensure compliance with all department policies. Additionally, since the incident involved a CPD traffic stop, per protocol, the SC Highway Patrol was asked to investigate.

Hargrove says it’s tragic that someone died from this incident.

"I pray for his family and for them to get an understanding,” said Hargrove. “We all have a time clock, we don't know the minute, the day or the hour."
