Some schools across the country are beginning to ban homework in the hopes of reducing anxiety among students, CBS reports.

On average, elementary school students have more than four hours of homework each week and high school students have more than seven hours, according to the Wall Street Journal and the Department of Education. More than 30 percent of teens experience some sort of anxiety, the National Institute of Mental Health says, and homework is a contributing factor.

CBS This Morning had child and adolescent family therapist Darby Fox on the show Friday morning, and she calls the homework ban an "ultimate reaction."

"There is a point to homework and the right amount really is age appropriate," Fox said.

Fox said that homework should be a supplement to what students learn in school. She said that some schools have taken the amount of homework given too far and blamed the race to get "the best resumes, the best test scores" and to get into the best colleges.
