President Donald Trump listens to questions from members of the media during his meeting with Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel at the G20 Summit, Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The South Carolina GOP says no decision has been made on 2020's potential GOP primary.

National headlines swirled Wednesday that the party was considering cancelling the 2020 primary, a move that would ensure President Donald Trump the state's nomination.

However, state party Chairman Drew McKissick said the conversation was premature.

McKissick told WLTX, over the phone, that the state party's executive committee would not meet to make a decision until late summer of 2019.

The 49 members would then vote on hosting a primary or not, with a final decision sent to the Republican National Committee by September 2019.

McKissick told WLTX he's had no discussions with national agencies or candidates about South Carolina's 2020 GOP primary.

However, he said if a legitimate Republican candidate entered the process, the state would likely host a primary. McKissick mentioned outgoing Arizona United States Senator Jeff Flake as an example.

The state's GOP executive committee consists of 49 voting members whom are elected in county GOP conventions.
