Prison Workers Don't Like Privatization Plan

State prison workers have told Corrections Department Director Jon Ozmint they oppose a plan to privatize health care in South Carolina prisons because it could cost them their jobs.

(Columbia-AP) -- State prison workers have told Corrections Department Director Jon Ozmint they oppose a plan to privatize health care in South Carolina prisons because it could cost themtheir jobs.Ozmint met with a few hundred employees Monday night at a training academy in Columbia. Ozmint says he's still considering Governor Mark Sanford's idea to privatize prison operations.The idea of privatizing health care in the state prisons was first floated at a budget hearing in July.Ozmint says the state is accepting bids on the prison health care contract until March 31st. He says a committee will then review the proposals before a decision is made. Ozmint said severalother states have privatized prison health care.Several employees complained after the meeting that not much was accomplished.
