REAL ID Day: What You Need To Know

If you haven't gotten the new REAL ID license that will be required in South Carolina starting next year, there's a good opportunity to get one this week.

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles along with South Carolina Representative Wendy Brawley are hosting an event on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, where South Carolina residents can purchase a REAL ID license or REAL ID card with proper documentation.

REAL ID Day will take place at Lower Richland High School at 2615 Lower Richland Boulevard in Hopkins, South Carolina from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

A REAL ID license is $25. A REAL ID card is $5 for people ages 5 to 16 and free for people ages 17 and older.

If you have a Commercial Driver's License, you can convert it to a REAL ID Commercial Driver's license as long as a skill or road test is not required.

Proper documentation includes:

• Proof of identity – a government issued birth certificate or valid US passport
• Proof of Social Security Number (your SS card or a W-2 that has your name, SSN, and employer’s name)
• Two proofs of current, physical South Carolina address (a current, unexpired SC driver’s license or identification card and a no more than 90-day-old utility bill with the same name and address)
• Proof of all legal name changes (marriage license or court order issued by your county’s probate or family court.)

The deadline to obtain a REAL ID is October 1, 2020. After that you won't be able to fly domestic, commercial flights, enter a secure federal building, or visit a military base unless you have additional federal identification such as a valid passport or a military ID.
