SC State University research center coming to Elloree

South Carolina State University is breathing new life into camp Harry Daniels in Eloree with a new research and extension center.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University is breathing new life into camp Harry Daniels in Eloree with a research and extension center.

Nestled on a lake, the new 15,000 square foot facility sits on 200 acres of land and will be home to a host of new offerings for students of the university and the community in the surrounding area.

According, to the university the new center will be in two sections, research and community.

The first section will deal with research and house technology, nutrition, small farm natural resource and a host of different laboratories.

The second portion is community. The space will also be made up of community development meeting quarters, smart rooms, multi media centers.

The site also has a rich history of being one of the few camp sites for African-American children during the period of segregation in the South.

While the team will house much more than summer camp programs, when designing the facility the architectural team wanted the site to have a welcoming and fun filled spirit.

"This is a place for retreat" says Michael Allen, architect working on the research and extension center.

Allen goes on to say, "When you see a building across the lake and the reflection of that lake, we just wanted something really nice to take advantage of both of those. The way the sun is positioned and the way that we postioned it closer to the water, it just creates that excitement for people when they start coming down the road."

The center in Elloree is just one of three centers that will be built around the state. The current center being built in Elloree is set to open in July.
