SCDNR wants your Christmas trees

With the holiday season winding down, many folks are wondering what to do with their Christmas trees. But those trees can have a major impact on the community.

Many residents spend the week after Christmas taking down their Christmas trees and Christmas decorations. But the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is giving residents the opportunity to give their trees another purpose.

The department will be collecting Christmas trees that South Carolina residents want to get rid of.

“We collect those Christmas trees that folks are getting rid of this time of year and we can take those out and sink them through some public waters in the state," says Chad Holbrook, SCDNR Biologist. "The benefit is that it provides a habitat for fish -- a lot of times for small fish it gives them a place to hide from large fish who want to eat them.”

The department currently has two drop-off locations for Christmas trees, one is the State Farmers Market in West Columbia and the other is on Black Oak road in Berkeley County.

“It gives that Christmas tree a second purpose," Holbrook says. "Instead of throwing it in the landfill, we can now put it in the lake and it provides things to fish before it deteriorates. This gives that tree a chance to do good for another couple of years out in the environment.“

SCDNR will be accepting trees at the drop off locations until January 10th.
