COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The sponsor of a bill that would ban drivers in South Carolina from holding cellphones in their hands says it likely won't pass this year.
Legislators in the House voted Wednesday to send the bill back to committee.
Opponents questioned if drivers could be sent to jail for not paying a $200 fine and if language letting an officer use seeing a cellphone in a hand as proof was fair to drivers who might grab their phone to record a traffic stop.
Bill sponsor Republican Rep. Bill Taylor of Aiken says he thinks if the bill makes it back to the House floor, it will be as weak as the state's current ban on texting while driving which carries a $25 fine.
Georgia passed a similar law last year.
