'We want to get our finger on the pulse of what the community wants us to focus on': input needed for Irmo parks

The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission needs to hear the community's opinions on what they want in their parks.

IRMO, S.C. — The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission consists of four parks: Saluda Shoals, Seven Oaks, Crooked Creek and Melvin Park.

This organization is starting to construct their Strategic Plan for the next 10 years and they need your help with their community needs survey

“This survey is step one, and we want everyone to take it in the district," Executive Director Mark Smyers told me. This survey gives you a chance to voice your opinion and share your thoughts about what direction you want to see these parks go in.

“Our strategic plan is not a plan we stick on a shelf. We’re not looking for that 35-50 page booklet that nobody will ever read," explains Smyers. "We want to be able to say ‘we’re doing this things because this is what you told us to do.'”

The last strategic plan was for the years 2010-2020 and one of the objectives was more athletic space. Because of that, Saluda Shoals expanded and added the fields that you see at the entrance to the park. Their goal is to have achievable projects that you want to see and have.

“Its extremely important that we get the community’s voice, we need to hear and get our finger on the pulse of what the community is wanting us to focus on.” Smyers says it takes about 15 minutes to take the survey online. There are also focus groups that they will be holding that you can participate in as well. This is an important opportunity to have your voice heard.
