Her resume as a player included All-SEC and All-America honors at South Carolina and then an outstanding WNBA career with a gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

That is what Shannon Johnson brought back to her hometown of Hartsville as the head coach at Coker University.

The former Hartsville Red Fox is in her fifth season as the head women's basketball coach at Coker University.

"I would say my rookie year, I didn't know what I was doing," Johnson said with a laugh when discussing her growth as a coach.

"But I think I've had a team that has consistently stayed with me, working hard for me. The SAC conference is tough, I appreciate being in it. You're going to get worked out every night. We have teams in this conference that can reall7y play. But I really enjoyed having this opportunity to coach, back at home. This is my hometown."

Johnson played at South Carolina under Coker alum Nancy Wilson who last May was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. Johnson says she looks back on her time with Wilson and can now appreciate the role Wilson played in the lives of all of her athletes.
