Myles Hedgecock threw a complete game, allowing four hits with five strikeouts as Cardinal Newman defeated Ben Lippen 8-2 to sweep the SCISA AAA state championship series 2-0.
It marked the first state championship in baseball for the Cardinals since 1998. First year head coach Charles Assey celebrated his second state title in two months. In March, Assey's wife Megan led the Spring Valley girls basketball team to the 5A state championship.
AJ DePalma, Simon Penso and Jake Rehling.helped the Cardinals jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with RBI singles. Cardinal Newman would lead 8-0 before the Falcons scored two late runs to get on the scoreboard.
