And then there were three.

Clemson backup quarterback Hunter Johnson is transferring from the program, leaving the Tigers with three scholarship quarterbacks.

“While it is always disappointing to lose a great person and a great player, I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work with Hunter and watch him grow and develop over the last year and a half,” Dabo Swinney said in a statement released by the athletics department.

“Hunter is one of the best young men I have ever coached and has a very bright future ahead of him.

“I wish him all the best as he decides on his destination.”

Clemson had six quarterbacks on the roster entering 2018, but Zerrick Cooper and Tucker Israel announced their transfers earlier this year.

Johnson, a former five-star recruit from Brownsburg, Indiana, completed 8 of 14 passes for 85 yards and one touchdown and one interception in the spring game. He also rushed for a 3-yard touchdown.

Last season He was 21 of 31 for 234 yards and two scores in seven games.

“I want to thank Coach Swinney and the Clemson family for giving me the opportunity to be a part of something special,” said Johnson.

“I’ve met some amazing people who I will forever call family. I am a better man and a better football player because of my time spent at Clemson. Go Tigers!”

The remaining quarterbacks on Clemson's roster are Kelly Bryant, Trevor Lawrence and Chase Brice.
