Former Gamecock helps Atlanta United win MLS Cup

Former Gamecock Brad Guzan was on the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as Atlanta United defeated Portland 2-0 to win the MLS Cup.

Former Gamecock Brad Guzan helped lead Atlanta United to the 2018 MLS Cup on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He made three saves in the team's 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.

He was one of the speakers during Monday's celebration which featured a parade in downtown Atlanta and a rally at the stadium. The MLS Cup victory marked the first title for an Atlanta sports franchise since the Braves won the World Series in 1995.

Guzan, who has started 47 games in two seasons with Atlanta (26-7-13 record), went 4-1 in the 2018 postseason with 12 saves, three shutouts and just two goals allowed.

He played two seasons for Carolina (2003-04) before being drafted No. 2 overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by CD Chivas USA.

He played four seasons for CD Chivas and was named the 2007 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Guzan made the move to Ashton Villa of the Primer League in the summer transfer window in 2008 where he would go on to play eight seasons. He's earned 60 career caps for the U.S. Men's National Team since 2006.

Guzan had a standout 2004 season for the Gamecocks, earning NSCAA Second Team All-American honors while also being named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. He made 104 saves (third most in a single-season) and lead Carolina to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Guzan's eight solo shutouts in 2003 remain a freshman record. His .714 career save percentage is fifth all-time in program history.
