New USC strength coach will emphasize speed

New Gamecock football strength and conditioning coach Paul Jackson has a background that features sprint work.

Monday will mark the first day when players will get their first taste of how Paul Jackson wants them to train.

The new director of strength and conditioning for Gamecock football was formally introduced Thursday and he talked at length about how sprint training will play into the offseason conditioning.

Jackson's background in speed training is what head coach Will Muschamp hopes will help his players avoid the injuries that have been an issue the last couple of seasons. The feeling is Jackson's background in that type of training will prepare the players for those Saturdays in the fall.

“Coach and I talked a little bit. I feel like you have to have exposure throughout the entire year to fast-speed sprinting to limit some soft tissue injuries,” Jackson said.

“You can’t get away from it for extended periods of time then think you can ask (guys) to go redline during the season or at any point and you’re not prepared for it. So we’ll have micro-doses of that throughout the year.”

Jackson comes to South Carolina after eight years in charge of the strength and conditioning program at Ole Miss.
