The Gray Collegiate Academy quarterback had a full ride to Tampa or be a prefered walk on spot in the Upstate. The longtime Clemson fan chose to take his talents to the Upstate, choosing the Tigers over South Florida.
Helms made his choice by pulling out an orange Clemson hat during a National Day Signing ceremony Wednesday morning.
He will be behind some heavy hitter with two-year starter Trevor Lawrence, rising sophomore Taisun Phommachanh and mid-year enrollee D.J. Uiagalelei. The Tigers also have walk-on Patrick McClure, a rising junior from Ben Lippen, giving the Midlands a pair of Clemson quarterbacks.
The fomer News19 Player of the Week passed for 4,126 yards with 48 touchdowns last season as the War Eagles went 9-4 and won their second consecutive Region 3-AA title. GCA reached the third round of the Class AA playoffs. The North-South All-Star recorded 98 career touchdown passes and more than 9,000 yards passing.
