Midlands tennis players, coaches hope Coco Gauff's success will inspire young tennis players

15-year-old Coco Gauff made it to the 4th Round of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.

Tennis players and  coaches in the Midlands are still shocked at the success of Coco Gauff at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.

Gauff, who is 15, made it to the 4th round of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, which included a victory over her childhood idol and women's tennis legend Venus Williams.

And although she didn't take home the Wimbledon title, tennis coaches in the Midlands feel she will have a tremendous impact on tennis in South Carolina.

"We've been needing an American woman for our juniors to watch," says April Gift, who works with the Lexington County Community Tennis Center, "Our kids were cheering for her and it's great to see that and now it's on everyone's minds."

And former Midlands tennis players were also impressed with Coco's success.

Shauna Williams started playing tennis at a young age and played college tennis at USC Aiken. She currently works as a tennis instructor and she's hopeful Coco's success will inspire the next generation of tennis players.

"More kids need to play for sure and I think with her doing so well and showing that she belongs out there, she will inspire other kids to play." Williams said.
