Former Gamecock Pitcher Michael Roth stepping away from professional baseball

The star pitcher who led the Gamecocks to two College World Series titles announced on Twitter he was stepping away from professional baseball.

Former University of South Carolina star pitcher Michael Roth posted a message on Twitter, revealing he was stepping away from baseball.

"I thought I would be prepared for this day.  I always knew it would come as it comes for every player," Roth's statement said. "I have decided to step away from baseball."

Roth played for the Gamecocks from 2009 through 2012.  In his first start in 2010, coming against Clemson in a National Semifinal game to go to the College World Series, Roth pitched a complete game, limiting the Tigers to just one run.  He would also start the game in which USC clinched its first College World Series title.

In 2011 he would also help the Gamecocks earn its second straight national championship, compiling a 14-3 record, with a 1.06 ERA.  He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2011, but would return for his senior season.

Following the 2012 season, Roth was drafted in the 9th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  He made his MLB debut in April 2013 with the Angels.  He also appeared in the majors with the Texas Rangers in 2016.  Roth also spent time professionally with the Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Rays, and Chicago Cubs.  He finished his major league career with a 2-1 record, and a 8.50 ERA.

Roth did not specify in his post what was next for him.

"Currently, it is hard for me to appreciate my career but like all things, time will allow me to look back with extremely fond memories. I'm excited for the next stage of life, to be around family more and pursue things that have taken the back burner for many years.  I'm also nervous about the next step and the uncertainty of what's to come.  Nevertheless, that uncertainty is where the thrill of life lies," Roth posted.
