Muschamp Names His Backup Quarterback

COLUMBIA, SC — There was talk about how the depth chart will shake out at the quarterback position once USC landed the commitment from Mr. South Carolina himself-Dakereon Joyner.

Jay Ulrich returns with some experience and newcomers like Darius Douglas are also looking for playing time. But Will Muschamp is going with the veteran.

Jake Bentley is the incumbent starting quarterback and rightly so. Michael Scarnecchia will again be the backup for Jake Bentley.

Muschamp said he likes what all the quarterbacks have done during fall camp including the Fort Dorchester product in Dakereon. But Mike knows the system very well. He has watched a lot. He missed all of 2016 due to a torn labrum and has only played in three games but the fifth year senior has the confidence of the head coach to get it done when is number is called if Jake is unavailable. That was made clear after today's scrimmage.

"There's no question we can win with him," Muschamp said. "Today I gave him some reps with the first group purposely in the middle of the series to put him in the game and he responded extremely well. In our first year Mike had a shoulder injury and didn't play much at all. Then obviously last year the game continued to slow down for him and I think he has a really good command of where we are. I'm very pleased with both Dakereon and Jay. Both of those guys showed some things athletically today that we know they have. We got to continue to advance in the throwing game."
