Westwood's Cam Smith Commits To South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC — After all the speculation and anticipation Cam Smith will be a Gamecock.

Everything came together on Friday night for the local standout recruit. His team got a big win to start the high school football season and he knows where he will pursue his football career at the end of the year.

What a night it was for the Westwood defensive back. Cam, a four-star prospect, said he would make his college choice after Westwood's season opener against Lugoff-Elgin.

For the first matter of business the Westwood Redhawks won big over Lugoff Elgin to get their season off to a good start.

Afterwards he revealed which school he would attend. It was between South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. He had a unique announcement, after taking off t-shirts USC was the last one and his teammates and family went wild.

Will Muschamp nabs another top notch in-state talent from two SEC East rivals and Cam knew earlier this year that Carolina was the place for him.

"I think it was early June. I was just thinking about it. I was like why not be at the school I always wanted to play at so it was an easy decision," Cam said. "They're building program around their football team so they're making new adjustments and new improvements to their team."

It was great night but a relief for the future Gamecock.

"Everybody's been asking me for like the last six months where am I going? So I'm just happy to get it over with."

Cam's head coach Dustin Curtis believes Coach Muschamp is getting a fine player.

"They're getting someone that is very confident. They're getting a very athletic player that can help you in a lot of ways. I think down the line if he needs to play safety he can play safety," Curtis said. "But he can definitely play corner. We put him on one side of the field and we expect him to hold that side down and that's the kind of kid that he is and he's a great returner. He's going to have his moments."
