Kelsey Felks Is The Player of the Week

Newberry High School is coming off a weekend where the girls basketball program captured its first ever state championship.

Not even a hairline fracture was going to keep Kelsey Felks from finishing up her high school career on the court with her teammates.

Newberry defeated Ridgeland-Hardeeville 57-50 for the 3A state championship, the first title in the history of Newberry girls basketball. Felks played a big role in the contest, recording 13 points and 23 rebounds with 17 of the boards coming on the defensive end. But Felks walked off the court with an injury to her right wrist - a hairline fracture that necessitated the use of a cast.

Next year, Felks will be playing basketball for Erskine and Newberry assistant coach Tonya Jeter says the Flying Fleet will be getting someone who never takes a play off, even if she is suffering from a broken bone in her wrist.

"She's one of the most tenacious rebounders I've ever coached," Jeter said.

"She goes from buzzer to buzzer. She doesn't care. She goes to the wall for everything."

Newberry head coach Melissa Mendenhall says the five years Kelsey has spent in the program paid huge dividends in her senior season and is a big reason why Newberry girls basketball was able to pick up a historic first on Saturday.
