Tom Knotts knows winning three straight 5A state championships is special. But for someone who won seven straight state titles at Independence High School in Charlotte, he didn't let the clock hit 11 p.m. Friday before he started talking about 2019.
"Three in a row? Well, now, we're going for four in a row," Knotts said after watching his team score 42 unanswered points to break open a close game with T.L. Hanna.
"Heck, we can start talking about that now. Three in a row is fun and good, but, after the weekend, we'll start to go to work on number four."
Dutch Fork receiver Gage Zirke heads off into the sunset with the three-peat. His 67-yard touchdown grab was part of his night which saw him record five catches for 182 yards.
"Man, it felt great, truthfully," Zirke said.
"Three rings on my hand - my hand is going to get heavy tonight."
Knotts has now won four state titles at Dutch Fork after Friday's 59-20 victory over T.L. Hanna. The win was also Dutch Fork's 25th in a row and should solidify its position in the USA Today national ranking. Dutch Fork came into Friday's game ranked 17th in the country.
