LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — An Irmo man has died after a crash in Lexington County that shut down North Lake Drive over the Lake Murray Dam for hours.

Trooper David Jones said the accident happened on South Carolina Highway 6 (North Lake Drive) near Corley Mill Road around 6:45 p.m. Jones said there were three units involved, a 2010 Ford Explorer, a 2007 Lexus, and a 2007 Honda Civic.

A preliminary investigation suggests the Ford and Lexus were headed West on North Lake Drive toward Irmo when the Honda, driven by 52-year-old David E. Burk of Irmo, crossed the center line and hit the Ford head-on. The Honda then continued on and hit the Lexus in the driver's side door.

Burk was killed in the crash and the drivers of the other two vehicles were taken to the hospital for treatment for what the Lexington County Coroner said were minor injuries.

The coroner's office added that Burk was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The crash and resulting emergency response closed North Lake Drive over the Lake Murray dam for an extended period. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is handling the investigation which it said is ongoing.
