Blossom Street bridge reopens after successful water rescue

The person was rescued safely, and traffic will begin reopening on the bridge, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Traffic will begin reopening on the Blossom Street bridge over the Congaree River after a water rescue, according to the Columbia Fire Department. 

In an update around 2 p.m., the Columbia Fire Department says that the rescue has ended and the person was found safely. 

According to Ashley Hunter, a spokesperson for the City of Cayce, a young woman was rescue and has been transported to a local area hospital.

The rescue was a combined effort between the Cayce Department of Public Safety, the City of Columbia Police and Fire Departments and the City of West Columbia Police and Fire Departments.

The Cayce Department of Public Safety and the City of Columbia deployed their Swift Water Rescue Units during the rescue efforts.

According to a tweet from Columbia Fire, the Blossom Street bridge was closed around 1:30 p.m. Friday as crews handled a water rescue on the river. The person has since been found safely and the bridge will begin reopening.
