Blythewood man killed in Friday crash, coroner says

Investigators said the man ran off of Mullis Road and struck a ditch and a tree.

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Authorities have identified a man who died in a crash just outside of Blythewood on Friday.

According to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, the victim, 53-year-old Joseph Freeman Jr. of Blythewood, died on Friday following a crash on Mullis Road near Claude Bundrick Road.

Master Trooper Brandon Bolt with the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) said that the crash happened around 4:30 a.m. when Freeman, driving a 2008 Nissan Maxima, was heading south on Mullis Road and left the road to the right side, striking a ditch and then a tree.

No additional details regarding the crash were available at the time. Both the SCHP and the coroner's office are still investigating.
