LEXINGTON, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Interstate 20 East in Lexington has reopened after the South Carolina Department of Transportation completed repairs after a dump truck struck an overpass bridge Tuesday morning.

Lexington Police said the South Carolina Department of Transportation shut down the Interstate 20 East at the Augusta Road overpass just after 7 a.m. to make repairs.

SCDOT workers added a barrier underneath the damaged portion of the bridge, to catch any falling debris, according to Highway Patrol's Lance Corporal David Jones.  

Dump truck crashes into bridge on I-20 in Lexington County
A dump truck struck the overpass bridge at US Highway 1/Augusta Road on Interstate 20 Eastbound. SCDOT will be shutting down the bridge to observe damage and make any necessary repairs.

SCDOT closed I-20 Eastbound in Lexington County at Augusta Road. Motorists traveling eastbound were detoured off the Interstate at US 1 to US 378 (Sunset Boulevard) and then return to I-20.

Police said motorists would not be able to enter I-20 East from Highway 1 until the repairs are complete.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety said the dump truck struck the bridge at around 4:30 a.m.

L. Cpl. Jones said the driver of the dump truck was going along the interstate with the dump truck up, when it struck the bridge.
