One dead, 17 injured in major I-95 crash in south Georgia

Authorities said the initial crash involving a tractor-trailer and SUV sent both through a guardrail and into oncoming interstate lanes on Saturday.

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — A Florida woman is dead and 17 others injured after a crash that sent a semi-truck and SUV careening through a guardrail into oncoming traffic in south Georgia, Saturday.

The Georgia State Patrol reports that the accident happened in Camden County on I-95 around 2 p.m. but kept several lanes closed for more than six hours.

According to the initial investigation details, the crash began when the driver of a semi-truck lost control and traveled across the northbound lanes hitting a Volkswagen Tiguan. Both then went into the median and through a guardrail into oncoming southbound lanes. The tractor-trailer hit a Volkswagen Passat and an F-150. A Chevrolet Tahoe and Dodge Dakota were also hit during the crash.

The driver of the Passat, 67-year-old Cheryl Enslen of Jupiter, Florida, died as a result of her injuries. The 17 other victims who were in the five other vehicles were taken by ambulance and helicopter to several area hospitals including Southeast Georgia Health System - Brunswick, Camden Campuses, UF Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.

At this point, the full nature of the crash is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
