COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities say a man who was walking along the railroad tracks near an interstate in Columbia has died after being struck by a train.

Columbia Police said the victim, a 64-year-old man, was previously seen walking on the tracks and carrying his bike before the train approached the area of Erie Street near I-126.

Police said the victim was walking with his back to the oncoming train which, according to police, sounded the horn and activated the emergency braking system.

In the aftermath of the deadly incident, police are reminding the community to use caution whenever on or near train tracks and "always expect a train."

Other tips for drivers and pedestrians include never trying to outrun a train, never walking or driving around lowered cross-guard arms, or attempting to jump on a stopped or moving train.
